Ten Great Healthy Foods

It needs to be noted that no matter how good a food is, it may not be right for everyone. The development of each person’s immune system will determine how many food sensitivities they have. Poor immune system development can cause a person to react negatively to the healthiest of foods. So, take this list with a grain of salt, listen to your body, and get tested for your sensitivities. Your body will love you for that! In our office I offer a full spectrum clinical kinesiology assessment of body systems, allergy sensitivities, toxins and more on the initial exam. This is then used to develop your ideal food plan.

Berries – Fruits have sugar. Berries have less sugar than other fruits, and are high in fiber. Need a better memory? Blueberries increase memory and berries in general are powerful antioxidants, and may even have anti-cancer properties.

Nuts – Nuts are healthy fats that appear to decrease the risk of heart attack and heart disease. Some of the healthier nuts to eat are Brazil, almonds, macadamia, walnuts, and pecans-eaten. Some studies caution against overeating nuts, but an ounce or two up to five times a week appears to be a healthy habit. Meat from grass-fed cows has a much different fat profile than ordinary supermarket meat: high in omega-3s, lower in potentially harmful omega-6s and loaded with CLA, a kind of fat known for its anti-cancer activity. A superb source of protein and vitamin B12, it's also missing the antibiotics, steroids and hormones found in the meat that comes from feedlot farms.

Grass Fed Meat – Meat has gotten a bad name and deservedly so. Today’s meat supply is dominated by animals that live penned up existences with almost no opportunity for movement, much less exercise. They are also fed harmful medications like antibiotics and hormones that are passed on to the consumer. Grass-fed free range animals are high in omega-3s fatty acids (healthy fats) and lower omega-6 fatty acids (harmful fats). This means less inflammation for you and fats that your body can actually use for nerve health, cell health and hormone production.

Eggs – Eggs are another product that has gotten an incorrect bad rap. They are high in protein and healthy fats, but low in calories. They are good for eye and brain health. They are a great source of cholesterol, and that is where the bad name for eggs came from. We now know that cholesterol is absolute necessity for good health, and is not the source of heart disease. So, do not fear the egg, but realize that you should eat quality eggs from chickens that are allowed to roam freely and feed naturally.

The Brassica Family – This family just might be the king of vegetables. Kale, cabbage, broccoli and Brussel sprouts help reduce cancer risk. They are exceedingly nutrient dense with vitamins and minerals and help detoxify the body.

Apples – Apples rank right next to berries as a healthy fruit. They are rich in fiber and other vital nutrients like vitamin K. Their anti-inflammatory properties help in disease prevention. Some people even use them as an appetite suppressant.

Raw Milk and Dairy Products from Raw milk – Raw milk should be organic, and should come from grass-fed free range cows. CLA is a fatty acid known to work as a cancer deterrent and it is prevalent in raw dairy. That is just the beginning! Raw milk is chock-full vitamins, minerals and good bacteria that will keep the gut healthy and the immune system strong.

Onions and Garlic – These are some of the most researched foods. Consistently it has been demonstrated that they protect against a number of conditions, most notably several cancers and heart disease.

Coconut oil – Researchers have studied populations of Polynesian islands, their traditional diets, and the effect on dental and overall health. Coconut was the chief source of caloric energy in these groups. These populations were healthy and trim, and exhibited positive vascular health, with no evidence that the high saturated fat intake from eating coconuts had a harmful effect. Coconut oil is also believed to support immune system health and healthy metabolism, provide an immediate energy source, and help keep your skin healthy.

Wild Salmon - Fish is another class of food that has gotten a deservedly bad rap. We have managed to pollute our water resources to the point that fish are going to have some harmful heavy metals, most notably mercury. Still, cold-water fatty fish like wild salmon contain large amounts of long chain omega-3 fats that the brain and heart crave. Research has also indicated that the long chain omega 3s also lower blood pressure and triglycerides, as well as improving mood.
