Yesterday we went into a shop, looked around and decided we would return there for drinks. We didn’t wait long to return. This afternoon we returned to Smekkleysa. The woman in charge told us the literal translation is “tastelessness”. We both felt immediately comfortable in their space yesterday, so we wanted to return and soak it up. Sheila had a $13 beer and I had my usual hot chocolate, $7. Both were excellent, though definitely more than we are used to paying. No surprise there. We expect everything we do to be expensive while in Reykjavik. Part of what I love is that they sell records and books, and have mini concerts. I love what they are doing, and I desire a similar future. One where I can entertain a dual purpose of serving people and creating/presenting art. We envision this but have not yet had the realization of how to do it. I hope the pictures do a little justice to the concept of the store/cafe and it’s tres chic bathroom.
But, not everything in Reykjavik has to be expensive. At Smekkleysa Sheila bought a used book, in English, in mint condition, about Dmitri Shostakovich. 500 krona, but don’t worry, that is less than $4.50. Above is a picture of Sheila in the square in front of Smekkleysa.
