The 38 Steps: I won’t get fooled again (until I do!)

June 15, 2025 By Dr. Pat Dougherty 3 Comments

Today was moving day again. We had a coffee and hot chocolate at Le Monge before our one mile hike with 40 60 pounds on our backs. The seats were a bit wet even after wiping them down. Last night was an impressive series of thunder and electrical storms with loud downpours on our roof. The clean fresh air made the wee bit wet seats tolerable. Pictured also is the plaza across the street form Le Monge. Coffee time was enhanced by a wide-ranging conversation with three Londoners.

We took the 1 pm train from Beaune to Colmar France. It was only a 21/2-hour ride. We turned it into a picnic with bread from the best bread store I have ever been in (sorry Grain Shed in Spokane), and meats, nuts, olives and cheese from the charcuterie and the market yesterday. The bottom photo features me eating bakery cracker, they’re incredible, beneath their sign

The scenery along the way was tremendous as we transitioned into the Alsace region of France. Lots of greenery and subtle architectural charges marked the route. Now, for the “I won’t get fooled again” part. You may recall we ended up on the wrong train a couple weeks ago because we did not know that it is common in France to have two trains start together then have one disconnect midway leaving one train to go one direction and one train to go a different direction. Previous experience paid off today. I read the departure screen and saw the possibility of that happening again. When trains arrive at the station it is normal and customary for conductors to get off the train. The solution is to make a beeline for the first conductor you see and ask him, or her, to guide you to the appropriate train and car. It worked like a charm today, especially since there was only a 3-minute scheduled stop for our train. We arrived in Colmar as scheduled.

Until today, I had never had an Air BnB, or a Booking.com host come to the station to pick me up. But, I had never stayed at Amar’s flat. It sure makes it easy being catered to as such. Amar is a super sociable guy. He transported us then showed us through the apartment explaining where things were and how to use them. As usual, there are steps, 38 of them from the front door to the apartment door, but they are neither steep or narrow. We have a 60 square meter space and that feels luxurious.  Pictures below.

Big bonus, the first bathtub I have seen since home. Off to bed now. Tomorrow we will walk to the old city center, find the tourism office and start planning adventures. We already have suggestions from our host Amar.

Your travels are so amazing and exhausting to read about! 😅 So many, trains, so many steps and so much to carry. How long do you stay in Colmar?

Other than travel days it is fun and relaxation, although we might like walking and climbing more than many. After many knee issues and injuries I believe this is the best they have been in many years. I believe the steps and walking are the reason. We are here for 8 days. Have to be careful not to move on too much. The tricky part is not knowing how much you will like a city until you have been there. There’s a need for at least some planning ahead which can make it hard to switch plans on the go. Air BnB and Booking.com have become very unforgiving about changes. We like the time on the trains. Our packs are too heavy and we think a lot about what we would do different to ease our load, but we are sure we will travel lighter in the future. Thanks for your interest.
