Went to Portland a week ago, but it was a business trip primarily. We were trying to do enough to keep Sheila’s mind off her October 29th heart procedure, but not put too much pressure on the heart. It was a short trip as we drove to Portland on a Wednesday and back on Thursday.
Portland is where I went to chiropractic school. The highlight of the trip was dinner at the Blue Moon, part of the McMenamin’s food drink and lodging empire. Chiropractic school was incredibly busy and stressful. Sometimes a person had to take a break. The Blue Moon was a favorite spot for me and some friends. We would decompress with a few well-made beers and a couple hours of friendly dart throwing competition.
The Blue Moon looks the same 30+ years later, except dart boards have been replaced by pinball machines. The same 60’s and 70’s rock music concert posters are on the walls. The menu seems to be similar and even my favorite beer from the past is still on tap, Wicked Widow Porter. I rarely drink a beer, but it was a treat to have a porter that was both rich and crisp with a strong coffee chocolate flavor. The fish and chips met our expectations also with extremely light and crisp batter.
We were home for one day before we flew to Las Vegas for a three-day conference on international travel, living and investing. We had planned for the conference for months, but initially it was supposed to be a stop on a cross-country trip. Sheila’s heart changed those plans. We had to do some rearranging but were able to be there for the first two days. We flew back on the third day in order to prepare for a 6AM check in for Sheila’s heart procedure on Tuesday October 29th. We did not have time for sightseeing in Vegas, it was another business trip.
The day we had anxiously waited for finally came and has passed. Now it is 10PM on November 1st. The surgeon told us things could not have gone better, and because Sheila had no predictive factors for the condition and has a healthy lifestyle, he told us no follow up is necessary. Sheila has had not even a slight symptom since. Tomorrow is a big day. We are going to walk up a hill. A hill was the instigator for her heart and breathing discomfort. She had walked hills almost every day, but it all changed drastically one day. We expect everything to be great tomorrow. Then it’s on with our travel plans.
We fly to Denver for 7 days on this coming Thursday. Denver is where I practiced for 11 years before I moved to Spokane. It is also home to 3 sisters and their families as well as numerous friends. Soon after that we will be on our way to a 2+ month stay in San Migual Allende in Mexico with side trips from there. That is when the travel blog will finally really get interesting. In the meantime come back for the inside scoop on our Denver adventures.

Onward to the fun stuff; hooray!
When you start feeling like pizza while in SMdA try Il Castello. It’s a couple doors down from where I stayed. Wood fired pizza after walking all those hills!

Thanks for reaching out. Everything is good with Sheila so now we will abandon our little in States trips and Head to Mex on Tuesday. We are planning on being in SMA at least through January before heading to Oaxaca. Let’s make sure we get together.
