Chiropractic, Ear Infections, and Immunity

Nothing makes a mother feel more protective than seeing their child suffer. Few things make a child more miserable than an ear infection. Before antibiotics diseases like bacterial meningitis, tuberculosis, pneumonia, whooping cough strep throat, and even ear infections (Otitis Media) often caused severe and lasting disabilities, or death. Antibiotic use was instrumental in reducing the number of premature childhood deaths and disabilities. Unfortunately, society went overboard when the discovery of penicillin kicked off the antibiotic era. Today the incidence of many childhood illnesses has risen as antibiotic-resistant bacteria due to overuse of antibiotics have emerged. Today US children get more ear infections than ever, 10 million new cases of Otitis Media a year accounting for 25 million office visits. That figure accounts for 35% of all pediatrician visits. Ear infections also account for about 25 percent of all antibiotics prescribed in the U.S.  The result of this is many parents seek...

Forbes Magazine Chiropractic and Medicare

April 20, 2014 Forbes online printed an article by Steven Salzberg that attempted to make the point that chiropractic has no basis and should be removed from the Medicare system. His byline is, “I cover pseudoscience and bad medicine, and sometimes good medicine.” Ironically, Salzberg appears to have been compelled to resort to pseudoscience himself. In great part his argument for banning chiropractic is the anecdotal evidence of two disgruntled former chiropractors. There is a device known as the straw man argument. This is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as, “a weak or imaginary argument or opponent that is set up to be easily defeated.” Wikipedia defines it as, “a common type of argument and is an informal fallacy based on the misrepresentation of the original topic of argument. To be successful, a straw man argument requires that the audience be ignorant or uninformed of the original argument.” Salzberg uses the straw man...

Your PIP Rights in an auto collision

If you are in an auto collision, you need to know this! I am writing this paper because I find many of the practice members in our chiropractic office have a lot of confusion about PIP. PIP is the Personal Injury Protection provision of your auto insurance policy. It is used when a person is injured in an automobile collision, and it pays: medical bills for up to 3 years or when the amount on the policy is reached, it pays a portion of your lost wages, the larger your PIP coverage, the more it pays, and, it even pays for household services if you are too injured to perform them. Often people do not know who their PIP insurance covers. By definition the policy covers: The person named on the insurance and all household members, persons who have permission to use that car, step children and foster children, and non-family...

Improvement in a Child with Pervasive Developmental Disorder Undergoing Chiropractic Care

A recent article in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health reported on a three-year old boy diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) who underwent chiropractic care over the course of 5 months. Following the introduction of chiropractic care and lifestyle changes, this child experienced an improvement in his quality of life. Spokane-based Dr. Pat Dougherty, D.C., who regularly monitors health and wellness issues closely in professional journals and other publications, was not surprised by these findings. “Studies of a similar nature have been conducted previously with similar outcomes,” said Dr. Dougherty, “but more research into the role of chiropractic and lifestyle changes are called for in this population of children.” Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) is an Autism Spectrum Disorder that is a developmental condition with no known etiology. Parents usually become suspicious of their child’s behavior around 18 months of age when regression of certain behaviors and actions begin. The diagnosis...

Short-Term Enhancement of Creative Thinking following a Chiropractic Adjustment

A recent article in the Chiropractic Journal of Australia reported on a pilot study involving the responses of ten subjects to a single chiropractic adjustment and how it affected their creative thinking. Creativity is the ability to generate ideas, “…both novel and useful (or influential) to a particular social setting.” Interview responses of the subjects post-adjustment indicated 7 of the subjects elicited new directions in a real-world creative tasks and six of the subjects reported renewed energy towards a creative project as well as improvement in their performance on the alternate uses test.  Spokane -based Dr. Pat Dougherty, D.C., explains that “The procedure for the alternative uses test is to write down as many uses for an object as possible during a ten minute period.”  “For example, naming all the different ways you could use a newspaper was one of the questions used, as was naming all the different ways you could use...
